Allen J. Hortop

Allen J. Hortop, age 70, a resident of Imlay City since 1978 and previously from Romeo, passed away on Monday, March 7, 2016 at Royal Oak Beaumont Hospital. Al was born April 26, 1945 in Mt Clemens, the son of Don and Arletta (Alwardt) Hortop. He married Cynthia Collins on June 22, 1968 at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Washington Township. Al graduated from Romeo High School in 1962, then graduated with his Bachelors Degree in Education from Oakland University and then earned his Masters of Education from Wayne State. Al taught for Rochester Community Schools for 35 years, first at Baldwin Elementary and retiring from Reuther Middle School. Upon retirement he continued working with the Rochester/Avon Recreation Association with the softball leagues and as an umpire for 40 years. He earned a spot in the Michigan Hall of Fame as an umpire. He also enjoyed four wheeling, hunting, & fishing, but Al most enjoyed being with his grandchildren at any of their activities. Al and Cindy were current members of Firmly Rooted Ministries in Oxford/Lake Orion. Allen is survived by his wife Cindy, daughters: Dawn (Phil) Campbell of Oxford, Lisa (Brian) Franey of Lake Orion along with grandchildren Collin Campbell, Sarah Campbell, Alaina Franey, Abigail Franey. Allen is also survived by his sister Louann A. (Jim) Hanvey of Imlay City. Funeral services will take place on Saturday, March 12 at 11 AM at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church of Washington Township. Visitation will take place on Friday from 1-8 at the Henry M. Malburg Funeral Home of Romeo and at the Church from 10 AM—11 AM on Saturday when Al’s service will start. Donations to Firmly Rooted Ministries Building fund would be appreciated.
