Bernard "Bernie" D. Smith

Bernard "Bernie" Smith age 64, a 16 year resident of Rochester Michigan passed away on August 14, 2017 surrounded by his family. Bernie was born on August 1, 1953 and raised in Sandusky, MI., the son of Lloyd and Virginia (Guigar) Smith. Bernie married Kendra Gardner on October 5, 1996. He worked at the Sanilac county Mental Health for many years and MORC supporting and advocating for people with disabilities and their care staff. Bernie loved to read and watch movies and organize things. He also was fond of puzzles and doing home repairs. Bernie is survived by his loving wife of 20 years, Kendra Smith of Rochester. Children, Carrie Walker of Lapeer Michigan, Andrew Smith of Rochester Michigan, Stefanie (Jerome) Cantlin of Macomb, MI., Stepchildren William (Lindsay) Walters of Ft. Lauderdale Fl, Jessica (Jamie) Walters of Akron Ohio. He is also survived by 5 sisters: Wanda (Dave) Vassar of Argyle, Michigan, Donna (Larry) Esser of Sterling Heights Michigan, Bonnie (John) Goecke of Sterling Heights Michigan, Rose (Paul) Rainville of Shelby Township Michigan, Jackie Rich of Sandusky Michigan, and Lloyd (Denise) Rich of Sandusky Michigan. He also has 4 grandchildren, Zachary, Trevor, Gage and Grace. You are invited to attend Bernie's "Celebration of Life" on Friday August 18, 2017 at 10 AM. The family is asking you to please bring a memory or an item to share about Bernie and what made him so special to you. Celebration will be held at Henry M. Malburg Funeral Home, 11280 32 Mile Road, Romeo, Michigan. Visitation will be held Thursday August 17, 2017 from 4-7 at the Henry Malburg Funeral home. Donations can be given to the PBS (Public Broadcasting System), (1 Clover Court, Wixom, MI. 48393) or Rochester Library, 101 2nd Street SE Rochester Michigan.
