Betty J. Matera, age 88, a 32 year resident of the Romeo area and formerly from Ithaca, NY., passed away on Friday, March 19, 2010. Betty was born on April 22, 1921 in London, England, the daughter of Karl and Maude (Kirk) Fagg. She married Joseph Matera in 1946 and after World War II in 1947, they moved to New York. During the War, she was in the W.A.F. (Women’s Air Force) in London and upon moving to New York, worked as an Account Clerk at Cornell University for 12 years before retiring in 1976. She managed bowling alleys in New York before moving to Michigan. Her hobbies included knitting, playing the piano, and was a Master at doing the New York Times crossword puzzles. While in Romeo, she was a member of St John Lutheran Church of Romeo. Betty is survived by her daughter, Sharon (Bill) Creed of Romeo, grandchildren: Alison (Joseph) Witt of Washington, MI., Joel (Jennifer) Groomes of Hawaii, and her great grandchildren McKenna, Joel, & Brendan. Betty was preceded by her brothers Kenneth, William, & Doug Fagg. Funeral services will take place on Saturday at 7 PM at the Henry M. Malburg Funeral Home with the Rev. Mark Evans officiating. Visitation will take place on Saturday from 2-9 PM. Burial will be at noon on Monday at the Romeo Cemetery.
