George Robert “Bob” Jones, age 78, a resident of Romeo for over 50 years, passed away on Tuesday, July 30, 2013 at St John-Macomb Hospital in Warren, Michigan. Bob was born January 23, 1935 in Saginaw, Michigan the son of George B. and F. Rena (Jerome) Jones. He married the former Sue Ford on February 2, 1957 in Saginaw, Michigan. After graduating from Central Michigan University with a degree in education, Bob was a teacher at Romeo High School for 3 1/2 years teaching business management and drivers education. In 1961, Bob became an agent for State Farm Insurance which he did for over 40 years. He was past president of the Romeo Jaycees and was voted Jaycee of the year. Bob was also vice president of the Community Youth and Civic Center and a member of the Village Recreation commission. He was also a charter member of the Romeo Elks Lodge and was a Elk of the Year. He was an avid softball pitcher, playing in a travel league for men over 75 league. He played over 100 games a year till last year when his health failed. His other hobbies include golfing where he achieved 2 holes in one over the years and was a volleyball player during the winter. Also a well known musician with his group “Bob Jones Saints & sinners”. Bob is survived by his wife Sue of Romeo, two sons: Carey of Virginia and Bradley of Florida. Also survived by grandchildren Jamison of Hawaii and Nathan (Melanie) of Virginia and his brother J. Richard (Sheila) Jones of Texas. Memorial visitation will be on Friday from 2-8 at the Henry M. Malburg Funeral Home, Romeo Michigan. Donations can be made to the family for the “Bob Jones Golf Scholarship Fund”.
