David Joseph Kerr, age 71, a 46 year resident of Romeo, passed away on Monday, January 19, 2007 at the Pine Meadows Assisted Living in Armada. David was born May 12, 1935 in Ironwood, MI., the son of Samuel & Margaret (Kelly) Kerr. He married the former Joyce M. Egbert on April 12, 1958 at St John Catholic Church in Ypsilanti. Dave served as a paratrooper in the U.S. Army's 82nd Airborn Division stationed in Germany during 1952-1954. Dave was a graduate of Eastern Michigan University with Bachelar of Science Degree and earned a Masters Degree in Education from Wayne State University. While at Eastern, he was a star pitcher for the baseball team and earned a minor league contract with the Washington Senators. He taught mathematics at Rochester High School for 34 years before retiring in 1993. While teaching, Dave was a longtime baseball and girls volleyball coach at Rochester High, being named Michigan's Coach of the year in baseball in 1973. His hobbies were golfing, bowling, hunting, fishing, and any other outdoor activities. He loved spending time at his cottage in Lewiston, MI. He also enjoyed the company of his many dogs during his lifetime. He belonged to St Clement Catholic Church for 47 years where he taught religious education and was a lecturer/reader. David is survived by his wife Joyce, children; Michael (Tracy) of Romeo, Lissa (Roy) Danforth of Almond, WI., Steven (Dawn) of Danbury, CT., Martin (Theresa) of Warren, and Nancy (Brian) Schroeder of Hemlock, MI. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren, 1 great granddaughter along with his siblings; Eugene (Eloise) of Biloxi, MS., Mary Parsons of Pensocola, FL., Robert (Jenny) of Union Town, OH., & Jack (Mary) of Conyers, GA. His sister-in-law, Fuki Kerr of Las Vegas also survives. He was preceded in death by his brothers William and Merlin. Funeral services will take place on Thursday, Feb. 22 at 9:45 AM at St Clement Catholic Church of Romeo. Visitation will take place on Tuesday from 7-9 and on Wednesday from 2-9 at the Henry M. Malburg Funeral Home of Romeo. Burial will follow in the Romeo Cemetery. Donations to the David and Merlin Kerr Education Scholarship fund or to the Alzheimer Fund would be appreciated.
