In Loving Memory of Papa -
With profound sadness, we announce the passing of David Leigh Thomas Jr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, who left us on Friday, January 31, 2025. He was surrounded by the love of his family in his final moments.
Dave was a devoted husband to his wife, Rhonda, with whom he shared 50 years of love, laughter, and partnership. Their 40-year marriage was a testament to the deep bond they built over a lifetime together. As a father, he was proud of his two sons, David and Brian, and embraced his daughters-in-law, Erica and Jessica, as cherished members of the family. His greatest joy came from his grandchildren—Everleigh, Daphne, Asher, and Noah—whose smiles filled his heart.
Dave is preceded in death by his beloved parents, David and Joan Thomas. He is survived by his brother, Jeff Thomas, and his sister, Cindy Grabowski (and her late husband, Terry Grabowski), along with numerous nephews, a niece, and extended family who will cherish his memory.
Dave began his career as a skilled tool and die craftsman, where he honed his attention to detail and dedication to excellence. His work ethic and craftsmanship followed him throughout his career as he went on to become a Purchasing Director at Durakon Industries in Lapeer, Michigan.
A man who loved the simple pleasures of life, he had a deep passion for classic cars, particularly his prized 1967 Dodge Coronet R/T. Whether he was polishing it to a perfect shine or sharing stories about its history, the car was a symbol of his love for craftsmanship, precision, and the thrill of driving a timeless beauty. Dave also found great satisfaction in working tirelessly on his lawn, always striving to make it perfect. To him, it was more than just grass—it was an expression of care, patience, and pride.
Dave had a deep love for history, often watching The History Channel and immersing himself in old war documentaries. He found great joy in learning about the past and sharing his knowledge with his family and friends, always ready to “share the aggregate of his 65 years of experience.”
He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His legacy of love, loyalty, and devotion will forever remain in the hearts of his family and friends.
A celebration of life will begin at 10:00 AM, followed by an 11:00 AM service, and 12:00 PM luncheon on Friday, February 7, 2025, at Shepherd’s Gate Church located at 12400 23 Mile Rd, Shelby Township, MI 48315.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Diabetes Association (https://diabetes.org/), multiple myeloma research (myeloma.org or themmrf.org), or Gilda’s Club (gildasclubdetroit.org), three causes close to Dave's heart, in honor of his enduring spirit and love for others.
