Edward A. Safko, age 85, a 48 year resident of the Almont Twp. Area, passed away on Sunday, May 31, 2009 at his home. Ed was born August 28, 1923 in Hazleton, PA., the son of Alex and Michaelena (Vernigigif) Safko. He married Annie Panko on Sept. 19, 1948 at St Michael’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Hazleton, PA. and she preceded him in death on July 15, 2008. Ed retired as a consultant for “Focus Hope of Detroit” in 1999. He previously worked in the tool & die business with the Ex-Cello Corporation in the metro area. His love was farming and raising his chickens & ducks. Ed served his country during WW II in the Army/Air Force and belonged to the VFW in Imlay City where he served as its quartermaster for many years. He also helped Almont Twp. by serving as its constable for many years. Ed is survived by his daughters: Janine G.(Russell) Ruthenberg, Christine A. (Russell) Jessel, & Kathleen M. (John) Carver all of Almont Twp. Grandchildren include Alysia & Andrew Ruthenberg and Ryan, Jacqueline, & Brandon Jessel. Siblings include George (Lucy) Safko & Blanche McCue both of PA and Lucy (George) Daniels of New Jersey. Ed was preceded in death by his daughter Cynthia A., siblings: John, Julie, & Agnes. Funeral services will take place on Thursday, June 4 at 11 AM at the Henry M. Malburg Funeral Home, (11280 32 Mile Rd, Romeo, MI.) with Fr. Wayne Ureel of St Cornelius Catholic Church of Dryden officiating. Visitation will take place on Wednesday from 1-8 PM at the funeral home.
