Ethel Mae Thuemmel

Ethel Mae Thuemmel, age 83 and resident of Romeo since 1967, passed away on Monday April 7, 2025.

Ethel was born on September 15, 1941 in Ashtabula Ohio, daughter of Robert C. and Ethel M. (Allen) Hienton. 

Ethel graduated from Michigan State University in 1963. She was active in the Romeo School District as a coach of Jr. High girls basketball and volleyball for many years. Ethel was also president of the Romeo Girls Softball League for many years and together with her husband hosted a summer invitational girls softball tournament bringing in teams to Romeo from around the region.

After retiring, Ethel became a sports reporter covering school sports for the local papers. She also enjoyed travel with her husband and friends to exciting locations around the world. She also enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren, following their athletic endeavors.

In her later years, she enjoyed spending the winter in Florida and spending time with friends and family.

Ethel is survived by her three children and their spouses: Becky & Rex Omonode of West Lafayette, IN Rob & Etiene Thuemmel of Greenwich, CT and Heidi and Mohamed Amhdar of Richmond, MI. Also her four grandchildren: Alaina Omonode, 22, grad student at Grand Valley State University, Jaelyn Amhdar, 22, senior at Goshen College, Mariere Omonode, 21, senior at Purdue University, Theresa Mae Thuemmel, age 8. Ethel is preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Leonard J. Thuemmel.

Visitation will be held on Friday, April 11, 2025 from 1 – 6 pm at the Henry M. Malburg Funeral Home in Romeo, Mi (11280 32 mi rd) Visitation will also be held on Saturday, April 12, 2025 from 9 – 12pm with a service beginning at 11 am.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to St. Jude’s Children’s hospital or the Make-a-Wish foundation.
