Joann Bernadich, age 71, a longtime resident of Shelby Township, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her family on Wednesday, May 1, 2019. Joann was born July 4, 1947 in Detroit, the daughter of the late John and Frances (Check) Sherry. She married Charles P. Bernadich on November 16, 1974 at St Jude’s Catholic Church in Detroit. Joann received her Bachelor’s Degree in English from the University of Detroit Mercy and later her Master’s Degree from Oakland University. Joann then worked over 40 plus years as a devoted elementary school teacher with the Fraser Public Schools. Teaching was always Joann’s passion in life, both inside and outside of the classroom. There was never a day that Joann stopped teaching. Upon retirement, Joann enjoyed shopping, always on the lookout for fancy shoes, glitzy watches, and jewelry. She cherished her many trips to Frankenmuth and the Grand Hotel with her husband Charles. Joann also treasured her grandchildren, Luke and Roman, always playing games and helping them with their homework and school projects. She especially loved to take her grandchildren on special vacations to Traverse City and Mackinaw Island. Along with her family, Joann was a longtime member of St. Clement of Rome Catholic Church in Romeo. Joann is survived by her beloved husband Charles, son Peter of Shelby Township, and daughter Maja (Enrique) Martinez of Macomb Township, and their two children, Luke and Roman. Visitation will take place on Friday (May 3) from 5-8 PM at St Clement Catholic Church (343 S. Main, Romeo Michigan 48065) with a 7 PM Rosary by the Knights of Columbus, Council # 7018. The funeral liturgy will take place on Saturday, instate at 9:30am, followed by Mass at 10 AM at St Clement’s. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery in Clinton Township. Local arrangements will be made by the Henry M. Malburg Funeral Home, Romeo Michigan. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Fr. Solanus Guild (1780 Mt Elliott, Detroit, MI. 48207) or to the Capuchin Soup Kitchen (Development Office, 1820 Mt Elliott, Detroit, MI. 48207) would be very much appreciated.
