Marjorie D. DeRees, age 99, a 9 year resident of the Villages Rehabilitation & Care Community of Armada, and previously from Romeo/Battle Creek area, passed away on Saturday, December 11, 2010. Marjorie was born May 17, 1911 in Battle Creek, MI., the daughter of Chancey D. and Arda M. (Howe) Owen. She married Duane “D.E.†DeRees on June 3, 1934 at her parents farm in Convis Township near Battle Creek. She was a bookkeeper/office manager during her working years. Marjorie worked over the years with “Morse Bros., Sheet Metal and Laundry Company,†of Battle Creek and then with her husband in the family business called “D.E. DeRees, Auto Electric Serviceâ€. Upon retiring, she enjoyed being involved with many antique automobile groups, including the Veteran Motor Car Club Association, (VMCCA), Antique Automobile Club of America, (AACA), and the Horseless Carriage Club of America. While living in Romeo, she was active with the Romeo United Methodist Church & the Romeo Senior Citizens. Upon moving to the Assisted Living in Armada, she was very active with her seniors at the nursing home, being the sports/weather reporter, keeping everyone up the scores for the Detroit Tigers and Lions, and for a while was the President of the Resident Council. In her earlier days near Battle Creek, she belonged to the “Mother Singersâ€, with the PTA of the Verona School District, and to an amateur movie group. Her hobbies include deer hunting, fishing, being an excellent seamstress, quilting, and knitting. Marjorie is survived by her sons: Delbert (Florence) DeRees of Romeo and Robert (Carole) DeRees of Tucson, Arizona. Grandchildren include David, Stephen, Julia, Terri, and Lisa. Great grandchildren include Alison, Kaitlin, Kelly, Roy, Robert, Jacob, Rosie, & Annie. Also survived by great-great grandson Jimi along with her sister-in-law, Elizabeth Owen. Marjorie was preceded in death by her sister Verna Bartelson and her brother Rodney Owen. Funeral services will take place on Wednesday at 1 PM at the Henry M. Malburg Funeral Home of Romeo with Dr. Gary Glanville of the Romeo United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will follow in the Romeo Cemetery. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 4-8 PM.
