Mary Hobson Beaumont, age 108 years, passed away on September 22. Mary was born on July 15, 1914 to Edith Mary (Fownes) and Albert Hobson in the small village of Millbrook, England. Born just weeks before World War I began, she lost her father, Pvt Albert Hobson who was killed in action in France, a week before the war ended. At 14 years old, Mary went to work in a cotton mill to help support her family. Her brother, Cliff Hobson, and sisters, Edith Dickinson and Joan Robinson all predeceased her. In 1949, Mary, her husband, Norris Beaumont, and her son, Derek immigrated to the Detroit area. The family moved to Royal Oak in 1952. Norris and Derek both worked as machine repairmen for the Ford Motor Company. Her beloved husband, Norris, died in 1980. Mary was a hard worker at various Sanders Confectionery Shops in Detroit and Royal Oak. She also worked as a cafeteria worker for many years in Royal Oak schools until she retired.
Mary's main hobby was walking which contributed to her long and healthy life. She proudly bragged of power walking across the Mackinac Bridge twice while in her 70's. She also enjoyed gardening and catching some sunshine. Mary loved giraffes and had the opportunity to feed them twice at the Detroit Zoo. In July of this year, Mary had a special birthday celebration. The City of Troy presented her with a proclamation in honor of her 108th birthday. She was also interviewed by a local television station. Mary's motto was "Live a long life, but don't get old!"
Mary is survived by her son, Derek (the late Delphine), her grandchildren, the Reverend Catherine Beaumont, Cynthia (the late Ron) Megee and Bruce (the Reverend Susan) Beaumont. Her 5 great grandchildren are Dr. Christopher (Katherine) Beaumont, Matthew (Maggie) Sermont, Dr. Jonathan Beaumont, Kristine (Spencer) Miller, and Inga Megee. Her 4 great-great grandchildren are Ethan and Riley Beaumont, Desmond Sermont, and Damian Miller. We were blessed to have Mary in our lives for so many years. She will live in our hearts
forever.
