Richard N. “Dick” Shafer, age 83, a resident of Romeo for over 49 years, passed away on Friday, May 12, 2017 at his home. Dick was born October 9, 1933 in Hammond, Indiana, the son of Raymond and Evelyn (Barna) Shafer. He married Karen Chilva on January 29, 1966 in Detroit. Dick was the founder/owner/operator of “R. Shafer Builder” in the Macomb County area, building many commercial buildings including the shopping center between 30 & 31 Mile Road along with the original Harvest Table restaurant. Dick also started the Romeo Industrial Park (between 32 & 33 Mile Road on Powell Road on the west side). He was well known in the area as a member of the Planning Commission and former Board member of Bruce Township. He would talk to anybody about local politics and would push for your vote if he truly believed that something was right/wrong. He was instrumental in many youth ball fields/soccer fields that he constructed & maintained and that his name “Would not be Mentioned” in doing this. Dick earned the “Man of the Year” with the Chamber of Commerce. He played softball with the over 30 crowd for many years, and enjoyed hunting & fishing. Dick helped out the Romeo Lions Club in many activites that they needed done over the years. Dick is survived by his wife Karen, children: Kristin Fox of Katy, Texas, Raymond Shafer of Romeo and Elena Bisbee of Washington Township along with grandchildren Nicholas & Michael Fox, Eva Shafer, and Colton & Blake Bisbee. Also survived by siblings John Shafer of Rochester Hills and Susan (Terry) Hill of Tsawassen, British Columbia. Preceded in death by sister’s Beverly Stone of Bloomfield Hills and Ellen Allison of Romeo and brother James of Davison, MI. Funeral services will take place on Wednesday at 11 AM at St Clement Catholic Church of Romeo. Visitation will take place on Monday from 4-8, Tuesday from 2-8 and at the Church on Wednesday from 10 AM till the Mass starts at 11 AM. Donations to the Romeo Lions Club would be appreciated.
