Sandy K. Race

Sandy K. Race, age 59, a lifelong Romeo area resident, passed away on Friday, June 2, 2017 at Beaumont Hospital in Troy, Michigan. Sandy was born August 27, 1957 in Mt Clemens, the daughter of Glen and Gerry Mecum. She graduated from Romeo High School in 1975. Sandy married Gary Race on June 27, 1984 at the First Congregational Church in Romeo. She loved to work and her last jobs were bartending for the Romeo VFW, Striber McVicar Post #2051 and helping out Fran at “Pamela’s Catering” in Romeo. Sandy volunteered lots of hours, helping and running the “His Table” food for the needy at the Romeo Methodist Church, helping with the food service at the “Brabb House”& “Octagon House”, running the food booth in front of the Congregational Church during the Peach Festival, the yearly rummage sale at the church, and instrumental in getting the church bell back working at the Congregational Church. In her younger days, she could be seen working at the “Blue Banjo” and also at the Romeo A & W. Sandy is survived by her husband Gary, children Glen of Ray Township and Kate at home. Also survived by parents Glen and Gerry Mecum of Cookville, TN, sister Karen Mecum of Sparta, TN, and brother Mike also of Cookville, TN. She was preceded in death by her brother Terry. Funeral services will take place on Wednesday, June 7 at 11 AM at the Henry M. Malburg Funeral Home with Pastor Stephen Zarrilli officiating, of the Woodside Bible Church, Romeo Campus Visitation will take place on Monday from 5-8 and on Tuesday from 2-8 at the Henry M. Malburg Funeral Home, Romeo Michigan. Donations to “His Table” would be appreciated. (Make checks payable to the Romeo United Methodist Church and write in the memo “His Table”.
