Susan W. Powell

Susan W. Powell, age 71, a longtime resident of Leonard, MI passed away at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor on July 31, 2012. Susan is survived by her loving husband of almost 50 years, Donald Burnet Powell. They married in Ferndale, MI on June 1, 1963 at Drayton Avenue Presbyterian Church. Susan and Don lived in Berkley for 25 years before moving to Leonard where they have spent the past 23 years. Susan is also survived by her children Susan (Roger) Aarons of Oak Hill, VA and David Powell of Washington Township, her grandchildren Devon and Isobel Aarons, her sister Katy Gibson of Aldon, MI, and her sister and brother in law Phyllis and Kryn Ihrman of Verona, VA. She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Kate Tullus, David and Sue Oliver, and her brother Thomas Tullus. During her career, Susan worked at Chevrolet Engineering, Berkley High School, and Ford Motor Company. However, her greatest joys were her family and church. She was devoted to her faith, taught Sunday school for many years, and rejoiced in singing in church choirs at Royal Oak Presbyterian Church, Romeo First Congregational Church and most recently Grace Lutheran Fellowship. Susan and Don were avid scuba divers, enjoyed being outdoors, traveling, camping, and bird watching together. Susan spent many years playing the piano and sharing her talent with multiple students she taught over the years. Susan spent her last 34 summers cherishing time at the cottage in Hubbard Lake, MI, where friends and family gather each year to celebrate tradition and friendship. It was here that she spent her last few weeks with her family that will miss her and always remember her as a loving Wife, a devoted Mother, and a kind and indulgent Nana. Memorial visitation will take place on Friday from 3:00 - 8:00 PM at the Henry M. Malburg Funeral Home of Romeo, MI. A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday at 11:00 AM at Grace Lutheran Fellowship, located 7525 32 Mile Road, Romeo, MI, Pastor Eric Majeski officiating. A reception will follow in the church to continue in celebration of Susan, who we will always love and cherish. The church was a central part of Susans life.
