Waldemar Hermann age 87, resident of Romeo/Washington Twp since 1974, passed peacefully at home, holding the hand of his wife Erna of 57 years.
Waldemar was born on January 30, 1936 in Volhynia, Ukraine, to Olga and Eduard Hermann. He immigrated in 1952 to the United States with his parents, and brothers Kurt, Erwin and Hugo to Menominee, Wisconsin via a sponsorship through the Lutheran Church.
Waldemar moved to Detroit, Michigan in 1957 to work as a tool maker, and later met Erna Weiss, also an immigrant from Maniersch, Romania. Both Erna and Wally had many life-long German friends that had also immigrated to the Detroit area. They socialized through the St. Peter’s German Lutheran Church and GBU Saxonia while courting and after their marriage. This German community played an important part in maintaining their culture, heritage and a strong faith in God. They married in July of 1967, and moved to Sterling Heights. After the birth of their two children, Roland and Elke, they built a home in Bruce Township. In 1978, Waldemar started his own tooling business, Exacto Tool Co., in the detached garage of their new home. Very soon after, Wally moved the business to Shelby Township in 1983, and provided for his family for many years. Wally loved skiing, playing Soccer, and traveling. He was responsible for creating and coaching the Romeo Soccer Club, which traveled to England in a youth player exchange program. Wally enjoyed making wine (and drinking) with his father in law George Weiss, from the grapes from his own vineyard.
Wally and Erna were founding members of the Grace Lutheran Church, and were active in the choir and bible studies for many years. In his later years, Wally and Erna traveled and played golf with long time friends from Germany, dubbing it the “German Open,” and enjoyed vacations to the Bahamas, Alaska and Myrtle Beach.
Wally will be remembered for his kind gentle nature, generous heart, and especially for his sense of humor, always finding something to joke about or a story to tell. God protected and brought him and his family through many difficult situations, and he always spoke of how gracious God had been to him throughout his entire life. His faith and resilience is the legacy that we will always cherish, and thank our Lord that we were blessed to have him as a husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend for 87 years.
Waldemar is survived by his wife Erna Hermann of Washington, Michigan, children Roland A. (Lynn) Hermann of Leonard, Elke K. Hermann of Arizona, brother, Hugo Hermann of Washington Township, grandchildren, Claire Louisa Hermann of Seattle, Gabrielle Ellisa Hermann of Leonard, Dakota Klug of Arizona, and Skylar Klug of Arizona.
