Walter B. Schaffstall, age 96, a resident of Dearborn and in the summers at his place in Port Austin, passed away at his daughter’s home in Romeo on Saturday, December 18, 2010. Walter was born October 17, 1914 in Lykens. PA., the son of Peter Andrew and Margaret Elizabeth (Welker) Schaffstall. He married Margaret Taylor on January 11, 1946 and she preceded him in death after 51 years of marriage on November 7, 1997. Walter worked for over 30 years in the Dearborn School System as the plumbing supervisor and retired in 1977. He was most proud of his military service where he served with the “Seabees†during WW II. Walter loved to cook and work in his garden, and while not working enjoyed being with his friends at the American Legion, Post # 0499 in Port Austin, MI. Walter is survived by his children: Mary (Lyle) McGeachy of Romeo, Kent Schaffstall of Oscoda, MI., and Francie Hochstein of Lapeer, MI. Grandchildren include Heather (Reid) Copeland, Melissa McGeachy, Bill & Mary Hochstein, and Paige Schaffstall. Great grandchildren include Carson & Brooklynn Copeland and Myla Hochstein. Walter was preceded in death by 11 siblings all from PA. Funeral services will take place on Tuesday at 3 PM at the Henry M. Malburg Funeral Home of Romeo with Rev. Ron Meadows officiating. After the religious service there will be a time to tell stories, humorous or not, about Mr Schaffstall. A little after 5 PM, the Macomb County Ritual Team will be doing honors.
